What kind of Identification do I need?California Driver's License or California ID Card (can be expired, but must have been issued within the last 5 years) U.S. Passport (or passport card) Driver's License or ID card from another state Mexican or Canadian Driver's License issued by the appropriate agency U.S. Military ID (must contain photo, physical description, signature, and a serial/ID number Valid Foreign Passport Employee ID issued by an agency or office of the state of California ID Card issued by a federally recognized Tribal Government Valid Consular ID issued by a consulate The Oath or Affirmation of one or two credible witnesses

Can a Notary give legal advice or offer legal documents?No. A Notary is forbidden by California Law from offering legal advice, or supplying documents, which can be considered offering legal advice.

Can a notary public prepare immigration papers?A notary may notarize documents that require notarization such as Affidavits, but they may not prepare, help prepare or file another person’s immigration papers unless they are an attorney or a certified and bonded immigration consultant. In addition, under California law a notary may not notarize form I-9, employment eligibility verification.
